North Woods by Daniel Mason

This month our Book Club book was a finalist for the Booker Prize in 2023. It covers about four centuries starting in the 1600’s in Western Massachusetts when a young couple escape from the oppressive environment of the Puritan Church.

They embark on their life’s journey on a small patch of land in the wilderness which they mark with a large flat rock for the cornerstone of their house. Several generations of this  house, its location, and its inhabitants become central to the story. The house grows and changes. The owners, occupations, descendants, and stories evolve, twist. and turn through the centuries, not always in a straight line nor easy to follow. Glimpses of insanity, domestic and wild animals, human interactions. over time, some magic realism, and, of course, an apple orchard are woven through the tale along with samples of poetry and the changing English language. It elicited a variety of interpretations including a fascinating tour of American literary history. It seemed to be well received, but interestingly, ChatGPT did not seem to get it.    Read and enjoy.
